I awoke with a sharp pain in my gut. It was so weird I didn't remember going to sleep. All I remembered was hiding in Nera's closet writing in the book like the old librarian had told me to.
"Get up on your feet both of you," a deep voice barked.
I stood as ordered and glanced around to see who was with me but my vision was blurred and all I could make out was a purple blur and a massive amount of brown. I blinked and regained vision. Ahead of me was a large brown podium and sitting on top of it was a grey-haired man wearing a red robe. To my right was a man dressed in purple robes who I assumed was the owner of the deep voice and it was confirmed when he whispered in my ear. What he whispered I do not know but I do know it was a joke of some sort because he chuckled as he strode towards the brown podium.
"My work here is done, judge," he said in that deep voice. "May I leave?"
"Yes, you may, Judius," the red robed man said.
I glanced to my left to find that the other person was Nera. She glanced at me and whispered, "Our time is done."
I gave her a confused look and she smiled. "Our time is done," she repeated.
The red robed man cleared his throat and then he spoke. "Nera, daughter of Dax and Judy you have been brought to the court to explain yourself. It has been reported that you are mingling with an alien from the woods. And what is more! You have been hiding this alien in your room without your parent's approval!" he had a triumphant look on his face. "And jury, if you must here more," he said turning behind him and facing the jury, "her parents ordered her to take this alien back, but she disobeyed and hid the alien away."
The jury gasped at this and begun whispering amongst themselves.
Then the man on top of the podium turned his gaze towards me. "Sleepyhead Zac, alien of the wood you have been brought to the court to explain this," he held up the black book in his hand. "Traveling the Bornic Network is strickly forbidden, yet you have decided to do it."
The jury gasped again and many yelled insults.
"It was accidental and you can't punish me. I am not of this world. I am from Earth."
The jury gasped and one stood. "His punishment shall be worse than we have planned. He came from a world with a Gate Keeper. Do not fall to his lies. He knew. The Gate Keeper of Earth surely explained all this Bornic Network stuff to him. Let's kill the boy!" The jury agreed but the red-robed man slammed his fist down.
"I, Bon Vendel, court master order the jury to settle or leave! Do not lie. We know you have been told this is strictly forbidden. Besides we can punish you. Just like we punished Belphinjun after his second journey through the Bonic Network."
"I reject that," a voice rang out. Nera and I turned to find the old librarian standing behind us. "You attempted to kill me after my third journey not the second. Oh and in case it hasn't clicked yet you failed in doing so. I pleaded for freedom and I came to a conclusion with my soon-to-be murderers."
"And that is what exactly, Belphinjun?" Bon Vendel asked?
"That if I destroy all evidence of my travels I could live and I will save this boy by destroying evidence of his travels as well. Hand it over!"
